The German men's national team started the second half of the FIH Pro League season on Saturday in Rotterdam with a 3-2 victory after a penalty shootout against Olympic champions Netherlands. After an open exchange of blows after 60 minutes, world goalkeeper Jean Danneberg parried all of the Dutch hosts' penalties and helped HONAMAS win two points.

Danneberg had little to do in the first quarter because the German defense around captain Tom Grambusch concentrated and didn't reveal any gaps. Apart from a penalty corner saved by Jakob Brilla (15th) by Oranje keeper Derk Meijer, there were hardly any dangerous offensive scenes for HONAMAS in the first quarter of an hour.

The Dutch captain Thierry Brinkman missed a great opportunity to take the lead in the 20th minute. Shortly afterwards, Germany took advantage of its first compelling scoring opportunity to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was initiated by Thies Prinz, who passed beautifully into the lane to Justus Weigand. Meijer was able to disrupt the German attacker, but his rescue attempt fell at the feet of Malte Hellwig, who hit the ball with his backhand under the crossbar from ten meters (25th). Because Brinkman missed another great chance a few seconds before halftime, Germany took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
