England Hockey has issued its updated rule guidance for the 2026/27 season and confirmed that the new framework will come into force on 1 September 2026. The document follows the latest revisions to the FIH Rules of Hockey and is aimed at clubs, leagues, organisers, officials and players across both adult and junior competition.
Among the main changes, the federation highlights clearer sanctions for having too many players on the pitch, the permanent adoption of the aerial ball rule trial across all competitions, revised handling of penalty-corner protective equipment and clarifications affecting both goalkeepers and umpires. England Hockey also notes that the permitted size of the goalkeeper's left-hand protector increases to 365mm under the updated framework.
The guidance is also practical in tone. Leagues and clubs are told they can adopt the new rules earlier in pre-season or summer events if they want to familiarise players and officials in advance, which makes the update more than a technical circular and turns it into an operational roadmap for the next domestic campaign.
